Bulkhead Systems

Bulkhead air conditioning canberraThe bulkhead type of indoor unit is becoming more popular due to the low set roofs of new homes and the reduced over-shadowing of the neighbouring property. The slim compact indoor model available for the VRV system is the most versatile and we have installed many of these in homes. We have also installed a number of standalone bulkhead units (one indoor connected to one outdoor unit) in apartments where we have slightly more room such as a drop-down ceiling over a kitchen area. We install them in a custom-made box that we cut on our own CNC flatbed router. This ensures we get an airtight seal with the unit enclosed within the box.

The only opening is into the conditioned space for the supply and return air. The box we make is made from flat black melamine, water resistant particle board and we have a custom line bar grille made to suit the box. This is usually between 1600mm to 2200mm long and 210mm high which is the same height as the indoor unit. This grille is removable and is how you access the filters. If there is a problem with the unit, it can be easily pumped down, unbolted from the top and slid out through the grille opening.

The sleek looking, long grille gives a high-end custom look with nice clean lines. We have had grilles made from the same cabinet material, so the air conditioner just blends in seamlessly into the cabinetry. There are other advantages such as individual temperature control in each individual room and no lost cupboard space for duct work to run within.
